Indian chutneys are super delicious and the best thing I love about them is that creating them is not a big task. Needs little prepping, mostly they are raw and fresh and they gather in just few minutes! This Amla Chutney Recipe uses fresh ingredients like raw amla (Indian gooseberry), raw red onion, and cilantro or coriander leaves. I added coriander leaves for some texture. You may add parsley or mint leaves too. Amla is itself sour and tangy, that is why I omitted raw mango, which is my favorite in green dips like Cilantro Mint Chutney or Dhaniya Mango Chutney. Ingredients
See Recipe card for the exact ratio of ingredients.
Amla- Indian gooseberry is the star ingredient of this chutney. It is transparent green fruit and is a rich source of Vitamin C. It tastes tangy and sour. Onion- Red onions work best. If you are making this chutney in winters, you may use green onions as well. Garlic- I love fresh garlic aroma and strong flavor in dips. I recommend using fresh garlic cloves and not the garlic powder. I have skipped ginger root but one may add that as well. Cilantro or coriander leaves- The fresh green cilantro adds color and texture to this dip. You may use fresh mint leaves or parsley too. Green Chili- Fresh green chilies add spicy kick. Adjust the heat as this is a spicy dip. Salt and Red chili powder
How To Make Amla Onion Chutney
Step 1 Prepare Ingredients
Wash and deseed 3-4 raw amla, peel and chop 1 small onion, and sort a handful of cilantro or coriander leaves and wash them in a colander. Peel 2 garlic cloves and wash green chili.
Step 2 Blend Ingredients
Place the chopped amla, onion, cilantro, garlic, and green chili into a blender. Add the salt and red chili powder. Blend all the ingredients until you get a smooth chutney. If needed, add a little water.
Step 3 Taste and Adjust
Taste the chutney and adjust the salt or chili powder if needed. Blend briefly again to mix well.
Step 4 Serve or Store
Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl. Serve the fresh Green Amla Chutney with your favorite snacks or meals.
Expert Tips
Add water slowly to avoid making the chutney too runny. The consistency should be thick enough to scoop but smooth enough to spread. Amla are sour and tangy in taste and I recommend not adding any lemon juice or raw mango as that would add more to the tangy flavor.
