What’s in a Blueberry Spinach Smoothie?

Bananas: Bananas are the MVPs when it comes to creaminess. They blend up smooth and dreamy, adding natural sweetness. Check out how we freeze bananas for perfect smoothies every time. Blueberries: This is the blueberry base for our smoothie. Adds a touch of sweetness and that beloved blueberry flavor.  Greek yogurt: Plain Greek yogurt is definitely my favorite flavor to add to smoothies, as it adds a little tang. It’s packed with protein to keep you fuller for longer.  Spinach: Now, spinach might seem a little out of place at first, but trust me, it’s the secret weapon. You barely taste it, but it packs a powerful punch of vitamins and minerals. Plus, it adds a nice thick texture to the smoothie, making it super filling. Orange juice: Adds a fresh citrusy zing and helps the smoothie blend better.  Fresh ginger: This adds a little zing to the smoothie, balancing out the sweetness and waking up your taste buds. High-speed blender: This is the key to ensuring you have a perfectly creamy smoothie and not an icy one.

In general, this smoothie is a great healthy snack and an easy way to get a serving of fruit AND vegetables in. We all know we could use a little more of those in our lives.

Customize Your Blueberry Spinach Smoothie

Nut butter: Add a tablespoon or two of almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter.  Texture: Toss in some hemp seeds, ground flax, or chia seeds Milk instead of orange juice: Feel free to use almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk as a plant-based milk option, or use coconut water or apple juice.  Add different fresh fruit: If you’re not a fan of blueberries or want to add more fruit, feel free to toss in whatever you like. Strawberries, pineapple, and mango would be delicious.  Want a little more sweetness? Add some honey or maple syrup.  Avocado: This creates a super creamy texture in the smoothie and adds a dose of healthy fats.  Powders: If you want a boost of nutrients, put a scoop of collagen powder or protein powder in your smoothie. We love adding this plant-based protein powder to our smoothies!

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Absolutely! We use fresh blueberries in this recipe, but frozen ones would totally work, too! You may need a little more liquid to help the smoothie blend better, though.

Can I add different leafy greens to the smoothie besides spinach?

Yes! Feel free to add some kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, and even celery! Don’t worry. You can barely taste the veggies.

How can I get a thicker smoothie?

Only add a little liquid at first. Then, blend your smoothie ingredients. If you need more liquid, you can always add more but you can’t take away!
