In a camping series full of savory somethings (like campfire mac ‘n cheese and a feta bake!), we needed something sweet to tie it all together (and tbh, camping breakfasts are the whole reason I even go camping). So on my trip to Alaska last month, I tried my hand at a fun campfire trick I saw somewhere in the depths of TikTok. And y’all…it delivered. These Campfire Orange Rolls are gooey and moist and packed with orange flavor. It’s safe to say – with their ultra-easy prep and extra-level of fanciness – these have made it onto my list of go-to camping recipes!

Here’s What You’ll Need

Oranges: You’ll need 4 large oranges to make 8 servings. Orange Rolls: Get yourself a can of Pillsbury Orange Rolls (complete with the orange icing!). You could replace the orange rolls with traditional cinnamon rolls (or even another flavor of roll) if that’s your jam!

How to make campfire orange rolls

Step 1: Stuff ItFirst up, halve each orange! Scoop out the fruit using a spoon (it can be helpful to carefully cut just inside the white part to help separate the fruit from the peel). It’s okay if some of the orange part is left, but try to get most of the watery fruit portion (it will make your orange rolls soggy otherwise). Place an orange roll into each half. Step 2: WrapYou have two options here: bake them individually or bake them in a tray (I prefer the tray for more even cooking). Either way, you’ll need to seal them up in aluminum, as shown in the pictures below! Step 3: CookWe tried a few iterations of these, cooking them in a bunch of different areas of the fire. Our best success was when we placed the tray over hot stones (or coals), which provided the most consistent temperature. You could also place them on a portable grill, or elevated over a small fire. It’s important that you don’t let the aluminum (tray or individual wrappings) come into direct contact with the fire, which will burn a hole through the aluminum. Depending on how close your rolls are to the heat, and how hot your fire is, your rolls will take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to finish cooking! But believe you me, it’s worth the wait. And because this isn’t a traditional oven, they won’t get that golden crust on top, but the dough should fully cook. Then just spread on the icing and devour!
