My go-to, everyday kind of smoothie goes something like this: banana + spinach + milk. Boom, smoothie. But whenever we have a jar of Nutella in the house, it calls for me constantly. So my natural reaction (besides eating said Nutella with a spoon) is to throw it in a smoothie! The result is a smoothie that tastes more like dessert than breakfast (while still packing in a decent handful of leafy greens and a banana!) The spinach is undetectable in flavor (thought it does make the smoothie a bit…green) and the Nutella does wonders for making this smoothie super chocolatey!
Healthy Nutella Smoothie Ingredients
Spinach: Use fresh or frozen spinach here. You can also substitute kale, thought the texture won’t be quite as smooth. Milk: Use virtually any plain or vanilla flavored milk here. Dairy, non-dairy, anything goes! Banana: Frozen banana is best for adding frosty coolness to this smoothie. Just peel, roughly chop, and freeze a banana the night before making this. Nutella: And of course, the star or the show! For a dairy-free option, use almond butter and a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa powder.
Variations on this Nutella smoothie
As with most smoothies, this Nutella smoothie is pretty flexible to changes and substitutions. Here are a few ideas:
Use Kale: Substitute the spinach for fresh kale (it may need to be blended longer as kale has a tougher texture than spinach. No Banana: You can replace the banana with 1/4 cup of coconut milk (even better if you freeze the milk into ice cubes before hand!) Dairy Free: Make it dairy-free by using plant-based milk and substituting the Nutella for almond butter + unsweetened cocoa powder. Make Popsicles: This smoothie makes great popsicles! Just pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze for 4-6 hours (recipe is in my book, For the Love of Popsicles).
